I have been an average adjuster for my entire working life. I qualified as a Fellow of the Association of Average Adjusters by stringent examination in 1978 and was accepted into the partnership of Wm Elmslie & Son. In 1990 I joined INDECS Limited and in 1998 formed Harvey Ashby Limited with Brian Ashby.

I have a very broad experience of adjusting all varieties of marine and energy insurance claims, including hull & machinery, general average, loss of earnings and cargo claims. I also advise both insurers and assureds in relation to energy related claims, in particular claims under policies insuring offshore construction and operational activities, business interruption and control of well.  I also act as as an expert witness.

In 2004/05 I served as Chairman of the Association of Average Adjusters and as President of AMD, the international association of average adjusters in 2013/15.

I am co-author, with Geoffrey Hudson, of the third and fourth editions of The York-Antwerp Rules - The Principles and Practice of General Average Adjustment. I have also had papers published and have given presentations on a variety of topics relating to marine and energy insurances.
